BLOOD LETTING '09

“Once again this bloodletting activity gives us one great opportunity to be of service to many of our countrymen. We are given the rare chance to give a part of us to save other people’s lives. “ - BGEN JOSE TONY E VILLARETE AFP, Wing Commander 15th Strike Wing
The 15th Strike Wing in coordination with the Philippine National Red Cross, Cavite Chapter conducted the annual event “Bloodletting 09”. The program was held at the TTC Main Hall and started at 0700H on 06 November 2009.

The volunteers’ first stop is station 1- Registration, followed by the ‘Screening’ wherein they would fill-up a form for medical history, and get their blood pressure. After assessment of medical records, the Red Cross nurses conducted ‘Blood typing’. The donors underwent ‘Physical check-up’ by the doctors, CAPT OLIVAZ PAF, MAJ BLANCA ORTIZA PAF. And lastly the donors proceeded to the ‘Blood Extraction’ area. A total of 91 qualified blood donors participated in the event. As what the Wing Commander imparted in his opening remarks, “…We are living and exemplifying two core values with the activity alone: Teamwork and Service above self. This is indeed very synonymous to what we do best. This bloodletting activity is just one of the few things that we do to take steps in making people aware that we care, and at the same time making ourselves as military men more aware of our subtle responsibilities to help people get up from maladies. It is an avenue for all of us to be aware that we are highly capable of reaffirming our noble role in nation building. This is a rare opportunity to make them aware that despite our sacrifices, we give a piece of us for those who want to live.”
STANDARD FIRST AID AND BASIC LIFE SUPPORT COURSE FOR THE TROJANS

The coming of the ‘BER’ months marks the beginning of a festive season, the start of the “days-before-Christmas” countdowns. Some have relatives or friends who were displaced, lost properties and worst, loved ones. Typhoons ‘Ondoy’ and ‘Pepeng’ have become a wake-up call for all of us.
Even the 15th Strike Wing’s men and women participated in different relief operations and rehabilitation programs in heavily affected areas. In line with this, the MDAAB Hospital headed by MAJ BETH TRAGURA PAF, conducted a five day seminar about ‘’Standard First Aid and Basic Life Support Course’’, with the objective of equipping the participants with the necessary knowledge and skills in first aid and basic life support. "SALUBONG" OF OUR LADY OF LA NAVAL
Sculpted by a non-Catholic Chinese
artist who was later converted through the intercession of the Blessed Mother, the image of Our Lady of the Rosary was commissioned in 1593 by the Spanish Governor of the Philippines, Luis Perez Dasmariñas, who wanted the statue to memorialize both his deceased father and his own regime. The statue was entrusted to the Dominicans in Manila and was enshrined in Santo Domingo Church, where it received an outpouring of love and devotion.
Fifty-three years later, in March, 1646, while Spanish invaders were still governing the islands and were outright enemies of the Dutch, the people were shocked to learn that a fleet of five Dutch war ships was bearing down on Manila. Carrying the triple threat of conquest, pillage and Dutch Protestantism, the enemy had chosen a time when Spanish warships were unavailable for defense. Two commercial galleons, "The Rosary" and "The Incarnation," were donated by their owners and were quickly outfitted in preparation for battle. While sailing into position for the confrontation, the men prayed the Rosary and dedicated themselves to La Naval, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. The Dutch ships were well-equipped with canons, firearms and trained seamen; the two Spanish-Filipino cargo ships were poorly fitted with a few guns. At the end of the day it seemed unbelievable that the Dutch fled the area while the defenders of the city returned home in glory, praising Our Lady for her protection. Our Lady of the Rosary and the men of her two cargo ships defeated 15 well-equipped warships. This victory at Manila is similar in many respects to the great naval victory at Lepanto, which was also credited to the intervention of Our Lady and the power of her Holy Rosary. In both instances Our Lady miraculously defended and granted victory to the seamen who place their trust in her.Sixteen years after the successful defense of Manila, an Ecclesiastical Council was convened in Cavite to study the unusual aspects of the five naval victories. The Council consisted of theologians, canonists, and prominent religious. On April 9, 1662, after studying all the written and oral testimonies of the participants and eyewitnesses, the Council declared that the victories were: Granted by the Sovereign Lord through the intercession of the Most Holy Virgin and devotion to her Rosary, that the miracles be celebrated, preached and held in festivities and to be recounted among the miracles wrought by the Lady of the Rosary for the greater devotion of the faithful to Our Most Blessed Virgin Mary and Her Holy Rosary.
This decree was signed by all eight members of the Ecclesiastical Council.
The anniversary of the vow made by the defenders of Manila during the second naval battle is still observed each year by the people of the Philippines who pilgrimage to the miraculous statue to demonstrate their love for Our Lady of the Rosary and their gratitude for the miracles of protection that took place almost 350 years ago.
Once again, as the Trojans observe the vow made by the defenders of Manila during the second naval battle, witnessed this year’s annual turnover rites and “Salubong” of the Patroness Our Lady of La Naval. The turnover and “Salubong” was held at 15th Strike Wing St. Joseph the Worker Chapel last 26 October 2009, with the procession
starting at the Philippine Navy Church. The Philippine Navy band together with the Sangley Elementary School students and teachers turned over the Patroness to the 15TH Strike Wing Chapel. The Holy mass was attended by the men and women of 15th Strike Wing and the Catholic Women’s League.
The “First Reading” was delivered by the Squadron Commander 595th MVS, MAJ FROILAN PARAS PAF. Likewise, the “Novena to our Patroness” was led by the Wing Commander 15TH Strike Wing, BGEN JOSE TONY E VILLARETE AFP.
In observance of the “Salubong”, CPT ADAN F ROSE (CHS) Wing Chaplain of St. Joseph the Worker Chapel, delivered the message emphasizing the essential value of love and life - that the lady of La Naval symbolizes Mary as a mother of Jesus and as a woman of prayer who followed the Lord. Last 27 September 2009, the 15th Strike Wing under its Wing Commander BGEN JOSE TONY E VILLARETE, in coordination with the Sangley Air Base Officers’ Ladies Club (SABOLC) and the Sangley Air Base Enlisted Ladies Club (SABELC), initiated a move to solicit donations in support of the relief operations for the victims of flashfloods that was brought about by Tropical Storm “Ondoy”. “GIVE A SMILE”

“A smile says it all.”
Truly, the 20th attack squadron gave the students of its adopted school a new reason to smile. Last 29 September 2009, the 20th Attack Squadron together with a few personnel from 462nd Supply Squadron and the 593rd Engineering Squadron conducted a Dental Mission dubbed as “Oplan Give a Smile Program” for the benefit of the students of Julian Felipe Elementary school.
The group which was spearheaded by CPT PENAFLORIDA braved the flooded streets of Sangley Point just to fulfill a promise. A promise to come back and bring with them anything that can greatly help the students of the school. A few months ago, when the squadron conducted its annual “Brigada Eskwela” it was found out that one of the pressing concerns of the school was the poor dental health of its students. It was also found out that the school despite the number of students it has doesn’t have a dentist of its own. Moreover, only one dentist takes care of the dental health of all public school children in the district where the school belongs. Upon knowing this, Cpt Ariola, squadron commander of the 20th Attack Squadron made sure that the unit can help address this concern of the school.
Finally, just in time with the unit’s 26th Founding Anniversary, the unit found the means. The squadron wrote to Colgate-Palmolive Philippines and sought for assistance regarding its intention of addressing the school’s pressing dental health problems. Fortunately, Colgate-Palmolive Philippines heeded to the unit’s plea and donated a box of toothpaste ready for donation. The squadron though with meager resources also found a way to buy toothbrushes for the students.
With resources at hand and professional dental personnel, the unit distributed the toothbrushes and toothpaste to the students of Julian Felipe Elementary School. Not only that, the students were also taught how to properly use their toothbrushes and take care of their dental health.
The activity benefitted one hundred students of the said school and the squadron is planning to continue the program until every student gets a toothbrush and a toothpaste.
TEAM TROJANS JOINS THE WORLD IN THE INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP

Major Danilo Atienza Air Base, the home of the Trojans, is situated in the coastal area of Manila Bay. Trashes that were washed ashore have been a perennial problem to the wing since it not only posts hazard to our air assets but also harmful to our health as well. Due to its geographic location, clean-up drives were often scheduled that it had become their way of life. No wonder, every Trojan is committed in keeping the shores clean.
Every third Saturday of September every year however is a special day for the Trojans for the past two years. It is reserved for a very important cause together with other 104 countries in the world; it’s the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Clean-up Day. This year, in the crack of dawn of September 19, 2009, Team Trojans assembled to help Mother Nature’s battle for clean shores. Unmindful of the rest that they might have experienced during that Saturday morning, the Trojans trudged towards the shores and picked up the trashes scattered all around. With the waste management scheme that the wing is implementing, the trashes that were collected were sorted out for proper disposal. They were headed by its environment advocate Wing Commander, BGEN JOSE TONY E VILLARETE AFP.
Working as one with the rest of the world, the Trojans were successful in their own little way of preserving nature. This only proves that despite the demands of our job description, Team Trojans can accommodate activities that are socio-economic and nation-building in nature. The activity ended with a clean shore, happy Mother Nature and fulfilled Trojans.

The second game was a match between the residents of Brgy 49-M and the PAF Juniors. ON SAVING LIVES...
by: LOBO 593
06 September 2009, a day
of infamy whichstruck the entire country, another sea disaster happened this time at the western part of the Zamboanga peninsula. Super Ferry 9 was tilting to its starboard side at 35 degrees. Of its more than 900 passengers and crew, 9 died and 28 were still missing. This was a very sad day for the entire country especially to the loved ones of those who lost their lives. And for those who survived and live to tell the tale, it was a start of a new life.
Media publicity of all forms focused entirely on the negative and sad part of the incident, from the politicians’ finger pointing and the sarcastic comments about the shipping company, to the destructive blogs of self proclaimed all-knowing anonymous internet bloggers. It must be the grief on the death of the 9 casualties and the uncertain return of the 28 missing that have outweighed the safe rescue of the 900 passengers who were brought back to their families. I have yet to read and watch in the news the acknowledgement and appreciation of our unsung and quiet heroes who dedicated their lives to rescue the 900 passengers, in the crucial and timely role that they have played in this particular incident. Nevertheless, it is not theirs to reap praises and rewards, theirs is to do their job beyond the call of duty. One of these unsung heroes are the men in uniform, more particularly, the men of the TEAM LOBO.The following story isthe firsthand experience of one of the pilots who were the first to respond to the scene of the incident: On the morning of September 6, 2009, on or about 0630H, a message was relayed to the 25th CAS stationed at EEAB that there was a sea vessel in distress somewhere in Sibuco, North West of Zamboanga City. Two OV-10s where immediately instructed to take-off to find the ill-fated vessel. The OV-10 element took off after a quick and thorough briefing by the Element Leader and went North West direction. Few minutes later, Lobo Flight was cruising at 1500ft, braving the thick haze of the early morning. The Element Lead immediately spotted the ill-fated vessel leaning on its starboard side, approximately 8 miles from the nearest shoreline. It was surrounded by a number of marine vessels to include those of the Philippine Navy. And looking further westward towards the horizon, several floating objects can be vaguely seen indicating that some survivors were being drifted further. The OV-10 Element leader immediately informed Lobo base and the other aircraft involved in the SAR re the exact location of the ill-fated vessel. Lobo Lead established contact with Hornet Flight which was still flying along the shoreline at that time. Next to arrive at the scene was the Navy Islander, circling above at 2500ft. From our current altitude and position, it was truly heart melting to see people aboard the ship waving. Some survivors even fired flares just so to catch our attention. Our immediate response and presence somehow gave hope to the survivors who were drifting out to the sea in all directions. At the very least they felt our presence, assuring them that they will be alright and that more help is on its way. Indeed I felt a sense of relief to see other sea vessels on their way to help the other passengers off to shore. The element then took firsthand pictures of the scene for documentation and report. If not for the minor discrepancy of the number 2 aircraft, we must have stayed longer at least to inspire and give hope to the desperate survivors. The MG-520 was also put on the alert as well, and they flew to the area for any help they can extend. The inter-agency response was the key to the safe rescue of the 900 more passengers, unity must be the right term for it. Many haven’t noticed such feat but in own hearts we know that we did our job excellently. From the entire AFP, Coast guard to the volunteers of the NRC and other NGO’s, we know that help is within each other’s reach.
…Many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism… a line excerpt from the poem desiderata. Once again a virtue of courage and heroism was shown by the true blooded Trojans during trying times like this. Despite the limited resources, the Trojans was quick to act and exhaust all available means to extend a helping hand and save lives.
